County Records Missing for 41 Years Returned to Archives Transcribed by Lawrence & Kathy Niedergeses

Many county records were recently returned and are now housed at the Lawrence County Archives. They are being sorted, cleaned and indexed so they may be accessed by researchers. The general inventory of the items given in this article includes land entries, loose land surveys, loose marriage bonds and licenses, loose guardian settlements, bonds, apprentice indentures, loose original guardian bonds, guardian settlements, apprentice indentures, inventory sale bills settling estates, deeds, land grants, original deed book A, tax books, school fund records naming teachers, store ledgers for William Love, F.F. Bentley and Bate and Simonton, Lawrence Union Newspaper. A list of grooms names, brides names, date, type of record with File # given.

Research by the author revealed that Mary T. (Allen) Stockard Matthews named two of her daughters after their fathers- Thomas J. Matthews and Silas A. Stockard. All were residents of Lawrence and Maury counties in Tennessee.

Two extracts from local newspapers are provided: one from 1896 relating to Adam Heimer, a "wine raiser" in Lawrence County and another from 1928 relating to the number of phones in Lawrenceburg, the volume of calls in one week and number of telephone employees.

Minutes to Lawrence County Genealogical Society Board Meeting, Saturday, March 21, 2015 Doyce Shaddix

The meeting was called to order by Lila Gobbell. The minutes were read and accepted. The treasurer's report was read and accepted. There was no old business. New business included Kathy Niedergeses reporting that 262 earlier issues of the Lawrence County Genealogical Society's Journal had to be tossed because they were sitting on the floor in the basement of the printer's office with no dehumidifier or heat and absorbed moisture. Twelve copies of the second printing of The Heritage of Lawrence County, Tennessee book remain to be sold. Eight copies of David Crockett, the Public Man and Legislator remain to be sold. Ryan A. Degan, publishing consultant for a book company from Sikeston, Missouri, met with the board and discussed the possibility of a contract with the society to publish a new pictorial book of Lawrence County. There was no decision made regarding this. The meeting was adjourned.

The meeting was called to order by President Wallace Palmore. The treasurer's report was read and approved. The minutes of the December 2014 meeting were read and approved. About Our Front Cover: The Log House the Heffington Family Built By Kathy Niedergeses

This detailed history tells the story of Charles and Kathlyn Heffington (still living at age 95) of Lawrence County- their family history and life on the land they purchased in 1948. Five cabins built of heartwood poplar were collected to build their log cabin in 1955. Photos and full descriptions of the interior and exterior are provided. Over 80 Club Requests Submitted by Kathy Niedergeses

Letters written by local citizens to gain entrance into the Over 80 Club and originally published in the Democrat-Union are reprinted and include Estelle Davis Mashburn (published May 5, 1966) and Cora Carr Dooley (published October 1, 1970).
