John and his sons James Crawford and David Cunningham along with three of his son-in-laws: Isaac Poling that married Sarah Rebecca, Benjamin Long married Mary Elizabeth, and Jacob Kinser married Susan Jane  joined Company K, 58th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. John entered at the age of 44 years of age, October 14, 1861 as a Private at Camp Chase, Ohio commanded by Captain Charles A. Barker. John was in the battles of Fort Donelson Feb. 14,15,16, 1862 and Shiloh April 7,1862. While near Pittsburg Landing, Tn. at the battle of Shiloh while on Provost Guard duty John took sick and died May 9, 1862 of typhoid fever at the Camp Hospital. It has been passed down through the years in the family that James Crawford has behind with father was with him at his death. And James told of burying John and placing a stone so after the war he could come back and take his father's body back home to Ohio. When the army assigned soldiers to find and bury all the bodies in the Shiloh cemetery John's body was found and moved.  So he is now placed in one of the unknown graves at Shiloh National Cemetery. Sophia Brian made application for Widow's Pension and she was granted one half pension #20851 from the US Government . She and her two sons that were still home (Bazel and Isaac Wesley ) received $8.00 per month.
