John Brown was born April 2, 1828, in Pike County, Georgia, to parents William and Sarah Brown. This Brown Family first showed up in Walker County, Alabama in 1853.
John was married to Martha C. Self, daughter of Nathaniel Self and Pamelia Loggins Self, also from Georgia, on August 4, 1853, in Walker County, Alabama. John and Martha had 6 children when the Civil War began, with a seventh child soon after John enlisted.
In early 1864, the Union army had pushed its way through Corinth, Mississippi to Florence, Alabama, then into Decatur, Alabama. They met in a temporary camp to recruit southerners who were loyal to the Union.
John enlisted in Decatur, Alabama, as a Private in Company "G", first Alabama Cavalry, USA, March 21, 1864. he was a company cook.
His brother, James Brown, Union Army volunteer, was killed during the early part of the war, and another brother, Daniel Brown who was caring for John's family in Jasper, Alabama, died from disease during the time John was away to war.
John mustered out in Huntsville, Alabama, October 20, 1865. he returned to Jasper, Alabama, to be with his family and fathered 5 more children. He died August 22, 1890, and is buried at Williams Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery, located on highway #96 in Jasper, Alabama.
