Henry Newton Lee was born December 7, 1826 in Wayne County, Tennessee, the son of Henry Lee who was born in Virginia about 1790 and Dorcas Copeland Lee, born in North Carolina about 1794. Henry Newton Lee married Polly Ann Morrison in 1846. They had eight children. On March 18, 1868, following the death of their respective spouses, Henry Newton Lee married his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ann Hardin Morrison. (Polly Ann Morrison Lee died in April 1864, and Hiram Morrison died in 1864 or 1865.) Three children were born to this second marriage. They also raised Elizabeth Ann's six children from her first marriage.

Henry Newton Lee served in Co. "A", 10th Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, USA. He joined for duty and enrolled at Waynesboro, Tennessee, for a period of 3 years, being a member of the first Federal unit formed in Wayne County, Tennessee. These men were mainly from the southern part of Wayne County. Lee mustered into service at the age of 36 on April 26, 1862, at Nashville, Tennessee, in Co. "A", 1st Middle Tennessee Infantry Regiment, 10th Tennessee Infantry, USA, at the rank of First Lieutenant. (This organization became Co. "A", 10th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry.) He was promoted to the rank of Captain on December 25, 1862, and served in this rank until his discharge at the age 39 on May 25, 1865 at Greenville, Tennessee.

The 10th Tennessee was also called the 1st Middle Tennessee Infantry Regiment; Gillem's Regiment, under Col. Alvan C. Gillem, serving as garrison and guard duty, Governor's Guards and part of the Post Forces of Nashville, being attached to the Army of the Cumberland and assigned to Tennessee Governor Andrew Johnson. The Regiment was mustered out of service June 23, 1865, at Greenville, Tennessee.

During his service, in February, 1864 near Nashville, Tennessee, Capt. Lee contracted pneumonia, which affected his lungs, breast and nasal passages. Also, in August or September of 1864, the 10th Tennessee Infantry being on forced march near Franklin, Tennessee, in pursuit of Rebel General Wheeler, the 10th Regiment under the command of Major General Rousseau, Capt. Lee and a number of other became exhausted by heat and fatigue.

Captain Lee continued to serve in this capacity until he was discharged at Greenville, Tennessee on May 25, 1865, by reason of expiration of term of service. Following the War, he returned to Wayne County, Tennessee. In the autumn of 1873, Henry Newton Lee hewed logs and built a home on the upper Green River in Wayne County. He continued to live there until his death May 31, 1897. he was 70 years old.
