Franklin R.W. Jones was born March 10, 1812 in Franklin Co.,
Tennessee. He married Mary Hall, February 6, 1833 in Blount Co., Alabama. Their
children were: Melinda, Mary Ann, Susan, Elizabeth, Louvisa, Nancy, Daniel F.,
Martha and Rebecca. Franklin and Elizabeth Wileman then had the following
children: Leonard, Wiley, Robert, Manervia and Asbury. Franklin later after the
Civil War then married Nancy Rackley November 3, 1869 in Blount Co., Alabama. He
was married by Benjamin Sheats. Benjamin Sheats was a brother the Chris C. Sheats
the chairman and spokesman for the anti-secession movement in Winston Co.,
Alabama. Franklin lived in
Winston Co., Alabama from 1840 until the end of his life. Winston Co., being called "The Free
State of Winston." From the book " A History of Winston Co., Alabama: The
Free State of Winston." The date was July 4th, 1851. The place was
Looney's Tavern in the North Central part of Winston Co., Alabama. A crowd of
between twenty-five hundred and three thousand persons, from dozens of North
Alabama counties, and some from as far away as the states of Georgia, Tennessee,
and Mississippi, were there. Tom Curtis, Chairman of the Committee on
Resolutions, was reading for the meeting the almost unanimous wish of those
assembled. The resolutions, in substance were as follows:
1st. We commend the Hon. Chris C. Sheats and the other representatives who
stood with him for their loyalty and fidelity to the people whom they
represented in voting against secession, first, last, and all of the time.
2nd. We agree with Jackson that no state can legally get out of the Union,
but if we are mistaken in this, and a state can lawfully and legally secede or
withdraw, being a part of the State, by the same process of reasoning, a county
could cease to be part of the State.
The reading of the forgoing statement had provoked the ironical
response in the Mr. Payne, eliciting from him the epithet "Free State of
Winston" and hanging on the County a title unique in American history and
which has been descriptive of one of the most significant and interesting
counties in the United States.
Franklin Jones served in the 1st Alabama Cavalry Company "G"
(Old). He was 49 years old when he joined. He was temporarily attached to the
11th Illinois Cavalry Company "I". He was appointed Sergt. April 1,
1863. He mustered out May 22, 1865.
