David Patterson McDannel

David Patterson McDannel was a private and gunsmith in Company B, 115th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  He enlisted on 2 Oct 1863 and lied about his age saying he was 18 when in fact he was only 16 years old.  On 31 Aug 1864 he was captured by the enemy under General Wheeler while defending block house #6 on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad near Smyrna, TN.  In September of 1864 he was paroled and allowed to return to his regiment.  After the war he was transferred to Company B, 188th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry in Murfreesboro, TN on 22 Jun 1865 and mustered out on 21 Sep 1865 in Nashville, TN.

 

David was born on 22 Aug 1847 in Pike Township, OH.  He married Margaret A. Shaffer (1 Oct 1845 – 29 Sep 1881) on 18 May 1871 in Stark County, Ohio.  Four children were born to this union (David Asa, Ira C., Mary Alice and Henry L.).  After the death of Margaret, David married Jehila Creighton or Carten (14 Nov 1857 – 27 Dec 1958) on 14 Jun 1883 in Homewood, PA.  The children of this marriage were Hazel and Otho.  David died on 24 Apr 1924 in Canton, OH.
