William Rudy Moore

46th Illinois Infantry  Company "A"

William Rudy Moore was born November 30, 1838 Buffalo Valley, Union County, Pennsylvania. His parents were Daniel F. and Rachel Rudy Moore. The family later moved to Illinois. There William, age 22, joined the Civil War September 10, 1861 as a Private in Company "A" 46th Illinois Volunteer Infantry under Captain Isaac A. Arnolds.. He went directly to Camp Butler, an Army training camp in Sangamon County, near Springfield. He served until March 19, 1865. He mustered out, after his 3 year enlistment as a Sergeant by reason of Promotion and expiration of term. He then reenlisted, the next day, March 20, 1865 the same Company and Regiment for another 3 years or less depending on how long the war was to last. He spent the rest of 1865 after the end of the war in various encampments, as the north was obliged to continue to occupy the south while the war fever cooled. He served until January 20, 1866. He mustered out as a 2nd Lieutenant at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He then boarded the steamer Lady Gay for Cairo. He then went to Camp Butler by train to await final pay and discharge. On March 9, 1887 William was still owed $185.58 from the US Treasury Department for his serves. He had a letter stating:

Lawrenceburg, Tenn.

Sir,
      You are hereby informed that, in consequence of the General Deficiency Bill, which made provision for the payment of claims certified by this Office, having failed to become a law, your claim, amounting to $185.58, as per Certificate No. 59110 cannot at present be paid.
       The balance due you will reported to Congress at its next session, and will be paid as soon as an appropriation therefore  shall have been made.
        No further application is required from you, nor can anything be done to hasten payment: but if you change your post-office address, you should promptly notify this Office, giving the number of the above-mentioned Certificate as well as your new address.

William never received the $185.58 owed to him by the US Government.

After the war, William R.  married Sophia Boone October 4, 1866 in Illinois and later moved to Lawrence County, Tennessee. There were nine children born to this union: Alice, J. Fred, Annie (my mother), Susie, Daniel, Emma, Milton, Minnie Viola and Clara. William was Mason and helped form the Masonic Order at Bodenham, Tn. later becoming the Giles County, Tn. Order. He died July 20, 1908 in Lawrence County, Tn. and is buried at Hughes Cemetery.
