
James Staggs Robnett

James Staggs Robnett was born November 30, 1844 in Wayne County, Tennessee on Forty-eight Mile Creek. He was the son of John Robnett and Nancy Staggs Robnett.
James was the eighth child in the family of ten. He grew up in Wayne County on the family farm. His grandparents, John and Margaret (Nesbitt) Robnett and Joseph and Fannie (Nesbitt) Staggs were early settlers of Wayne County.
James enlisted as a Private in Company "A" Second Tennessee Mounted Infantry Union Army October 2, 1863 at Nashville, Tennessee. He was was almost 19 years of age and was in the same Company with his older brother Joseph Staggs Robnett. He was discharged at Nashville on October 14, 1864. His personal description was given as "complexion: dark, eyes: brown, hair: dark, and being 5 feet 9 inches tall."
After his service in the Army he served as Sheriff and Justice of the Peace in Wayne County. He performed many marriages for his relatives and neighbors. He was a farmer, later moving to Lewis County, Tennessee in the Riverside Community.
James married Sallie Frances Dodson October 31, 1877. Sallie was the daughter of E. F. and Susan (Williams) Dodson who lived on the Green River. They became the parents of six children, Susan Myrtle, Sherman Ellen, James F., Roscoe C., Dodson W., and Bert E. Robnett.
James died January 6, 1919 in Lewis County, Tennessee and was buried in the Banks Cemetery. Sallie (Dodson) Robnett died January 29, 1932 and was buried beside her husband in Lewis County.
