Benjamin & Salina Jones

Benjamin Smith Jones was born June 19, 1838 in Barren County, Kentucky. He was the son of Moses P. Jones and Sarah Peden Jones. Benjamin enlisted October 10, 1861 at Camp Andy Johnson. He was Mustered in at Camp Ward, Kentucky on December 30, 1861 as Private in Company "F" 21st Kentucky Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal in February 1863. Benjamin was Mustered out on January 23, 1865 at Huntsville, Alabama.

In 1862 after the retreat of Bragg from Kentucky, the regiment returned to Nashville, Tennessee. On the December 9th, 1862, it with other regiments of the brigade under command of Colonel Stanley Mathews, while out foraging, were attacked near Dobbins Ford by Wheelers Rebels Cavalry. The conduct of the 21st on that occasion was highly commended by the brigade commander, and some of the non-commissioned officers and men were complimented by Field Orders by General Rosecrans, for their gallant conduct, Benjamin S. Jones, Company "F" was one of those.

The 21st was engaged in the following battles: Perryville, Stones River, (lost 60 killed and wounded) Chickamauga, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, New Hope Church, Pine Top, Kennesaw Mountain, Smyrna, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Franklin and Nashville.

After the war, Benjamin went back to Kentucky, and married Salina Ann Carey. Benjamin and Salina had 3 children. Benjamin died in Allen County, Kentucky June 14, 1926 just 5 days short of his 88th birthday.
