County Cemeteries
Memorial Day is a patriotic holiday in the United States with Memorial Day
services held each year to honor the memory of American servicemen. Some
cemeteries have their decoration day on Memorial Day, however many of them hold
their decoration day on Saturday or Sunday from April through November.
This is a day for the communities to gather to clean up and decorate the cemeteries. Some churches have "dinner on the ground" or in the churches fellowship hall. Many churches originally had special services with gospel singing after dinner, but due to lack of interest by many of the younger generation, not as many churches have singings now. Most people place silk or other artificial flowers on graves now, but when it began live flowers were used. Through the years flowers have also been homemade using crepe paper, tissue paper or kleenex tissues.
The list below gives many of the decoration days in Lawrence County in hopes it will be useful to researchers. We used several sources for these dates, so there may be errors. If you think any of these dates are wrong, please contact us with the corrected date.
