Pleasant Garden Cemetery
Location: This cemetery is located just off, West, of Brace-Summertown Road on the Buffalo River. It is perhaps one of the oldest cemeteries in the County. The Cumberland Presbyterian Pleasant Garden Church is located adjacant to the cemetery and tradition tells us that it was founded in 1818-19, although no known records exist substantiating this fact. Presbytery was held in this church during the Civil War in order to evade the armies passing through the County. The church is still active. The oldest settlers in the community have handed down the story of how this cemetery received it name. In the early part of the 1800’s a family came through this area in a covered wagon and stopped there to camp. Their name was Garden. During this course of their sojourn, the wife died and was buried there. The family did not stay, but continued on, so no tombstone was ever erected for her grave. This community was settled by families some time before the County was organized. The Walker family came here about 1809-10. The Buies, Ratcliffs, Vorhees, and Cahffins were other early settlers. There are as many ( or more) unmarked graves in this cemetery as there are marked ones. This was a remote pioneer settlement; people had no way of acquiring tombstones in those early times. The back section of the cemetery was reserved for the slaves.
