Lawrence County Marriages 1926-1929, compiled by Donna Ramsey

Loose original marriage certificates for the time period 1926-1998 have recently been moved from the courthouse to the archives. The archives is now in possession of many more records for the time period 1926-1929 than was thought to be in existence. The information on these certificates has been assembled in a list of 20 pages which provides a supplement to the book of marriages 1818-1929 housed at the archives. The list is arranged in alphabetical order by groom’s last name and includes the bride’s name, date, and box and file number where the original certificate is stored. The Heritage plans to publish the entire list and starts in this issue with names Aaron-Crews, Marvin.

The Isaac Wesley Brian Family, by Reita Jones Burress

Minutes to LCGS Meeting, Saturday, September 15, 2001

The meeting was called to order with President, Wallace Palmore, presiding. Recent Acquisition of Marriage Records At Lawrence County Archives, by Kathy Niedergeses

The author brings to the researcher’s attention certain discrepancies in the recording of marriage dates for marriages in the county clerk’s office over the years. In some cases, dates of the marriage were taken from the actual certificate (the date when the marriage was solemnized by the presiding officer), while in other cases the dates of the “return” of the certificates to the county office were used. In most cases the dates vary only a few days, but some show discrepancies by as much as months. The staff at the archives is attempting to sort out the situation and is seeking volunteer help in the endeavor. The following schedule shows the discrepancies in the relevant records:

1818-1929 - marriage records by archives staff - actual marriage date on certificate

1924-1959, 1960-1999 - marriage record books by Nancy Crowder - some date of return; some actual marriage date

1924-1999 - county records books on microfilm - some date of return; some actual marriage date

1926-1998 - newly acquired additional loose certificates - actual marriage date on certificate

Niedergeses

The Board approved donations of $250 to the archives for additional microfilm and $100 to the editor of the Heritage for toner and paper.
