All spelling is taken like it was written. At the time of the 1890 U.S. Census, the Census Office undertook an enumeration of all veterans who had served in the Union forces during the Civil War. In addition to names of the veterans (and their widows, if deceased) the schedules were to include branch of service, unit served with, dates of enlistment and discharge, current post office address, disability incurred plus "other information necessary for a complete statement of the veteran's term of service.
