McLean Cemetery #1

Location: From Lawrenceburg, take Highway 64E to Gimlet Road. Turn left onto this road and go around a curve. Just past the curve there is a house on the left side of the road. Turn by this house, which will be the first road to your left (Beuerlein Lane). Cross the creek and follow the road between two houses and up a hill. The cemetery is on your right on a little rise in the middle of a pasture on the Niedergeses farm. It is on what was once the original Samuel McLean home place. In 1967, there were about 6 or 7 graves with stones that had no inscriptions. Some of the stones are broken, laying down, or deteriorated so badly you can not read them. At one time cows were allowed to roam through it. The listing was compiled from several sources: 1) 1936 WPA records; 2) 1955 Lawrence Co. Historical Society listing of names; 3) 1965 listing by Mrs. Lillie Belle McLean Appleton.

(Note: Since the listing in 1967, Strib McLean installed a fence around the cemetery to keep the cows out and kept the cemetery cleaned. Since Strib’s death, the cemetery is again becoming over grown with weeds, but supposedly is still cleaned once or twice a year.) Photos of this cemetery and markers can be found from a link off the Lawrence County Archives webpage in the cemeteries section titled Pictures of Lawrence County Cemeteries, then searching on McLean.
