Mexican War 1846-1848

Soldiers Discharge Papers

The following discharge papers for soldiers who served in the Mexican War were found in Deed Book I. The information included in the papers are the soldier's name, where they were born, age, height, complexion, hair and eye color, former occupation, when he was mustered in, rank, how long they served. All were discharged because of disability (probably service related). Original spelling has been kept intact. Copies of the actual document can be obtained by contacting the Lawrence County Archives.


William H. Kirksey, Army Discharge

To all whom it may concern know ye that William H. Kirksey a sargent of 1st Leiutenant G. H. Nixon Company first Regiment Tennessee Volunteers who was mustered in to servis of the United States on the first Day of June eighteen hundred and forty six to serve for twelve months is hereby Honorably Discharged from the Army of the United States on reason of sargents surtificate seting fourth his desability.

Said Wm. H. Kirksey was born in Maury County State of Tennessee Twenty five years of age five feet six inches high fair complexion Black Eyes Dark hair and only occupation when Enlisted a mechanic Giving ???? at Vara Cruz this 10 April 1847.

Wm. P. A. Hail, Army Discharge

To all whom it may concern know yea that Wm P. A. Hail a private in 1st Leutinant G. H. Nixon's Company first Regiment Tennessee Volunteers who was mustered in to the service of the united States on first day of June Eighteen hundred and forty six to serve for twelve months Is hereby Honorable Dischared from the Army of the united State on Reason of the Surgeons Surtificate setting fourth his Desability.

Said Wm P. A. Hail was born in the county of Maury State of Tennessee Is Thirty one years of age five feet nine inches high fair complexion Blue Eyes Dark Hair and occupation when Enlisted a Doctor.

Given at Vara Cruze this 10th day April 1847.

Albert G. Billingsley, Army Discharge

To all to whom it may concern Know ye that Albert G. Billingsley a private of Capt G. H. Nixon's Company (M) First Regement of Tennessee Vol. who was enlisted on the first day of June one thousand eight hundred and forty six to serve twelve months is hereby honorably Descharged from the army of the united States this 28th Day of March 1847 at Matamon's? Mexico by Reason of Surgeons certificate of Disability Said Albert G. Billingsley was born in Washington County in the State of Tennessee is Twenty three years of age five feet ten inches high fair complexion Black Eyes Black hair and by occupation when Enlisted a farmer.

Given at Matamon's? Mexico this Twenty Eight day of March 1847.

To all whom it may concern Know ye that Daniel A. Goff a corporal of 1st Leiutenant G. H. Nixon Company of the 1st Regiment Tennessee Volunteers who was mustered into the servis of the United States on the 1st day of June 1846 to serve for twelve months is hereby honorably discharged from the army of the united States on reason of Sugeons Certificate Setting fourth his disability said Daniel A. Goff was born in Giles County State of Tennessee twenty four years old five feet six inches high Blue eyes Light hair fair complexion & by profession a farmer when enlisted given at Tampico? this 28 day of february 1847.

To all whom it may concern know ye that Isack W. Curtis a private of 1st Leutenant G. H. Nixon company first regiment Tennessee Volunteers who was mustered into servis of the united States on the first day of June Eighteen hundred and forty six to serve for Twelve months is hereby Honorable Discharged from the Army of the united State on reason of Surgeons certificate Setting fourth his Disability. Said Isack W. Curtis was born in Bedford County State of Tennessee Twenty Two years of age five feet Eight Inches high fair complexion Blue Eyes light Hair and by occupation a black Smith when enlisted given at Vera Cruze this 10th April 1847.

Know ye that A. A. Turnbou Private of 1st Lieut G. H. Nixon Company first Regiment of Tenn Volu. who was enlisted the first day of June one thousand eight hundred and forty six to serve for one year is hereby honorably discharged from the army of the United States by order of Maj Genl Winifield? Scott, said allen A Turnbou was born in Giles County in the State of Tennessee is nineteen years of age, six feet high Fair complexion, Blue eyes, red hair, and by occupation when enlisted a mechanic.

Nixon (M) Company first Regiment of Tenn Volun who was enlisted the first day of June one thousand Eight hundred and 46 to Serve one year is hereby honorably Discharged from the Army of the united States by order of Maj Genl Winfield Scott Said William W Willbancks was born in Franklin County in the State of Tennessee is Twenty two years of age six feet high fair complexion Blue Eyes Light hair and occupation when enlisted as farmer. Given at New Orleans this 26th Day of May 1847.
